Description
HO Ping Lan (her first name literally means ‘icy orchid’) — an elegant Chinese name that might not immediately suggest a connection with calligraphy and painting.
Yet it was precisely this contrast that inspired her family to organise this solo exhibition for Ping Lan, giving her the joy of seeing her own exhibition on the eve of her 88th birthday. The works on display are a selection from Ping Lan’s years of practice. They convey a strong sense of everyday life. She followed no particular school or established style; her work is entirely her own. Some works bear the marks of damp, mould and the passing of time. Rather than conceal or restore these imperfections, her family have chosen to leave them untouched — for these traces are part of the works themselves, and part of the life in which they were created.
